Whoo Shem on you! Somizi Accused of Stealing TV Show Idea
Media personality, Somizi Mhlongo-Motaung, has been accused of stealing intellectual property for his hit cooking show, “Dinner at Somizi’s”.
The popular DSTV’s 1Magic cooking show started airing in July 2020 – and it centres around Mhlongo-Motaung hosting celebrity guests for dinner at his home, then attempting to reveal their most intriguing and controversial topics they have never previously got candid about.
On Tuesday, 15 September, former 702 radio host, Eusebius Mckaiser, took to Twitter to reveal some shocking emails showing that Hastings Moeng had pitched the cooking show idea to Mhlongo-Motaung back in 2014.
Moeng’s allegedly proposed TV show was meant to be called “Dinner Kwa Somizi”, a Zulu phrase which translates to “Dinner at Somizi’s”.
Two years later, the aspiring television producer, who so much wanted to see his material on TV, further sent a treatment synopsis of the show to Somizi’s current producer, Legend Manqele, hoping for a green light.
Moeng claims that he didn’t receive a reply, however, the similar show is currently airing.
Twitter is divided over allegations of theft against the Idols judge – with some defending their favourite TV star, while others felt disappointed.
MultiChoice spokesperson, Benedict Maaga, has confirmed that the broadcaster is aware of the allegations and has been in contact with Moeng.
